I am currently taking my Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Photography at the Academy of Art University (AAU) in San Francisco, California. I’m almost done. I exhibited my cyanotype photography in three locations this year.

Soho Photo Gallery New York

Jill Enfield selected This Old House as one of the images in the Alternative Processes Competition at the Soho Photo Gallery in New York. Opening night was November 5, 2013. Since New York is only a 2.5-hour Amtrak train ride from Baltimore, I went up for the afternoon and made an expedition of it. I arrived early enough that I managed to squeeze in a visit to the Julia Margaret Cameron exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art before heading down to Soho later that evening. Above are some camera phone snapshots of my print on the wall.

The Alternative Processes show is on until the end of the month, so if you are in New York, stop by. There are a lot of beautiful prints on display.

SPE Member Exhibition

For the first time, I went to a Society for Photographic Education Mid-Atlantic (SPEMA) Conference. It was held this year in Asbury Park, New Jersey. There was a juried member exhibition based on the theme “This Is Not Photography” and two images of mine were selected.

This exhibition was interesting in that I did not have to submit framed cyanotype prints. Instead, the gallery printed all the images for the exhibition. The presentation style was informal as you can see in the snapshot above. I always hand print my images using the cyanotype process, and so I found the inkjet prints fascinating. They had a lustre to them that was quite appealing. It reminded me of experiments I did last year with brushing acrylic medium onto cyanotype.

The exhibition is being hosted by The Gallery 13 on Cookman Avenue in Asbury Park, and it will run from October 19 - 28, 2013. If you are around the area, please drop by.

As for the conference itself, it was a great experience. Maggie Taylor and Jerry Uelsmann were the featured speakers. Their artist talk was entertaining and highly educational. I got to meet fellow artists as well. It was very life affirming. Come to think of it, the SPE National Conference will be held in my hometown of Baltimore next year (March 6-9, 2014). I will definitely be going to that one.

Academy of Art Home Page Feature

I’m doing the last two semesters of my Master of Fine Arts AAU Home Page (MFA) degree in Photography at the Academy of Art University (AAU) in San Francisco, California. I will hopefully graduate by May 2014. It’s been a long program (as I am working full-time and doing this program part-time). Two of my images are featured in the home page right now.
